THE POWER OF CONVERGENCE:
A Groundbreaking Guide to Getting Real Business Value Out of Technology

The seamless melding of an astounding array of digital music files with a tiny, battery-free player—yes, the iPod is a marvel of modern technology. But that’s not why it’s hailed as one of the most innovative products ever, driving Apple’s impressive comeback in the personal computing arena. MP3 players with the same technology existed years before Apple introduced the first iPod. What gave the iPod its edge is the marriage of the iTunes online music service that allowed consumers to buy songs, rather than albums, with the user-friendly hardware. “In other words,” as noted business technology entrepreneur Faisal Hoque makes clear, “the business model—not the technology—is what made the iPod a tremendous success.”

In THE POWER OF CONVERGENCE: Linking Business Strategies and Technology Decisions to Create Sustainable Success (AMACOM; May 2011; $27.95 Hardcover), Hoque reveals the bottom-line benefits of managing business and technology together, instead of treating them as silos or applying technology to business for technology’s sake. Going beyond simple alignment, he shows business leaders how to synchronize the use of technology with their business operations and objectives. As he demonstrates, companies that fully and continually integrate the best technology with what’s best for the business stand out for their innovative thinking, efficient processes, and agility in responding to new opportunities. Such “whole-brain enterprises,” as Hoque likes to call them, also tend to keep on expanding their reach and growing revenue, even in the most challenging markets and conditions.

Backed by extensive research and fieldwork, THE POWER OF CONVERGENCE (www.thepowerofconvergence.com) demonstrates technology’s potential to help shape strategic business choices, to serve the processes and products that create business advantages, and to strengthen a business’s purpose. To help business leaders tap that potential, chapters are packed with proven management best practices and real-world success stories, including Apple, UPS, and Ford Motor Company. Readers will also learn from cautionary tales of mismanaged technology initiatives, including the FBI’s Virtual Case File System—a $171 million investment in what was supposed to be the future of crime-fighting and anti-terrorism operations—and its troubled state-of-the-art replacement, the $451 million Sentinel System.

Among other features and benefits, THE POWER OF CONVERGENCE offers:

  • An index that highlights the compelling connection between corporate financial performance and business technology convergence.
  • Lessons in developing the critical capabilities of an agile and innovative company.
  • An operational blueprint for categorizing, analyzing, rationalizing, and managing the right technology to achieve business goals.
  • Lessons in applying the disciplines of asset portfolio management to business technology.
  • Expert advice on reorganizing working groups, reporting relationships, and decision-making processes to effectively bring the business and technology sides of an organization together.
  • Specific and practical steps for turning innovative ideas into profitable actions, reinforced with a “takeaway” at the end of every chapter.

Presenting a framework for integrated business and technology management, THE POWER OF CONVERGENCE is not just a how-to guide. It’s a business management mandate and a call to arms for today’s business leaders. “Globalization is redefining the marketplace and what competition means,” Hoque stresses. “We need convergence now more than at anytime in history to make the next generation enterprises thrive…Doing nothing is not an option.”
